Overwatch is Blizzard’s fourth major franchise. It was released for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC in May 2016, and Nintendo Switch in October 2019. It was initially launched with only casual play, but since then Blizzard added a competitive ranked mode, various “arcade” game modes, new characters and maps.

Shortly after the launch of Overwatch, Blizzard reported it had over seven million players. This number continued to increase until a reported 50 million player base as of November 2019. Now fans wonder about a possible release date for Overwatch 2.

Will there be an Overwatch 2?

More than four years after its release, and after a year of convincing leaks and reports, Overwatch is officially getting a sequel. The new Overwatch 2 will have new maps, heroes, new multiplayer modes (even co-op) and, most interestingly, a story mode expanding on the narrative that Blizzard has been building with Overwatch’s current character cinematics.

Blizzard announced Overwatch 2 during BlizzCon 2019 with this announcement cinematic:

Overwatch 2 Release Date

When Blizzard announced Overwatch 2 in November 2019 the game was apparently still in early development and they had no release date in mind yet. There have been no new announcements since then, so no official release date either.

However… —there is always a however— in January 2020 a tweet from PlayStation Brazil’s official account mentioned that “2020 will be the year Overwatch 2 comes to PS4”. Days later another tweet from the official account of the Overwatch League team Vancouver Titans also mentioned a 2020 release date. But both tweets got deleted quickly after being published, so they might have been simple mistakes rather than a leak.

In any case, we strongly believe that Overwatch 2 will, in fact, not come out for PS4 but rather for the new PS5 which is presumed to release in November 2020.

So, if we are to believe that it will happen in 2020, we are of the opinion that the release date of Overwatch 2 will take place sometime in November 2020.
