The first Breath of the Wild received acclaim for its open-ended gameplay and attention to detail, and has been cited as one of the greatest video games of all time. By 2019, Breath of the Wild had sold over 17.84 million copies worldwide, making it the best selling Zelda game.

Will there be a Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild 2?

Yes! During E3 2019, Nintendo announced that a sequel to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild was in development for the Switch. The sequel was conceived during the planning for a Breath of the Wild’s DLC, but the team came up with too many ideas —some of which couldn’t be implemented due to technical constraints— so they decided to use them for a new game.

Nintendo didn’t share much about the still untitled sequel, but they did reveal this short teaser:

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild 2 Release Date

We haven’t got any official news on the release date for The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild 2 since its announcement in November 2019, only rumors and debatable leaks. We hope to learn more on the subject during the next Nintendo Direct, which is expected to happen in March 2020.

In the meantime… to the rumors! Last year, twitter user and journalist Sabi suggested that Breath of the Wild 2 was due for release on Holidays 2019, which we know didn’t happen… Later, on another tweet, he suggested it might not even happen in 2020, as he warned that “Zelda release dates are historically delayed, internally or publicly”.

For the past two decades, we’ve seen a new release of The Legend of Zelda universe every two years, with some exceptions. In 2019 we saw the release of Link’s Awakening, a remake of the 1993 game for the Switch, so it wouldn’t be all that surprising if we didn’t get any new releases in 2020.

In addition, back in December 2019, Nintendo put out a hiring call for The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild 2 in its own job listings platform. The company was looking for scenario planners and level designers to help out with the game.

With all that in mind, we expect the release date of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild 2 will take place in early 2021. This is also supported with the reports that Nintendo might be launching a “Switch Pro” around the same time, allegedly capable of running at 60 fps and in 4K. It would make sense that Nintendo launches these two together.
